Last week I shared one of my favorite transformations of our sitting room from our renovation of our personal home that we completed in 2013. In case you missed it you can click here to view. This week I thought I would share our bright light white open & airy kitchen transformation. We finally added a subway tile backsplash this last Spring & it feels much more finished.
I absolutely love how the overall flow & space transformed from drab & dated to bright, light & fresh. Before the kitchen was closed off from the living room & was dark & dreary.
There was a small nook in the back corner with a low ceiling leading to the single back door. I’ll never forget the day during demo Travis called me to say he was thinking of tearing it out completely to open up the kitchen more, what did I think?!? YES!!! Of course I’m was immediately on board! We actually work together quite well that way.
That also provided us the opportunity to add the bank of three large windows. After a little of my own convincing;). But it has turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. The space is full of natural light. We have beautiful river views in the distance. The space is open to the living room & dining, which is great for how we live in our home everyday. It’s a great space for entertaining friends & family with plenty of space for everyone. The French doors to the back porch are perfect for easy outdoor entertaining too.
Truth be told we were on a serious budget when we completed our home. We used IKEA Cabinets. We did the best we could at the time with what we had. If I had it to do over there are a few things I would change now in the kitchen. At the time the modern farmhouse design was all the rage, hence the Restoration Hardware barn light pendants & concrete countertop. Which I still love, but my taste has changed a bit. I would probably choose a little more modern / classic selection for lighting if I had it to do over. I would probably go for more of a custom finished look for the cabinetry & higher end countertops and add a range hood over the stove too. I think it’s easy to be your own biggest critic. But all in all the overall flow and footprint I would not change a thing!
What do you think? Do you love white kitchens? I would love to hear your thoughts!
